Is history merely the reconstruction of events that have happened in the past? Or is there some deeper purpose and meaning to these reconstructions? What is the meaning of History? Why reconstruct a story about historical experience? Hindu Itihaasas and Puranas have often been called mere "Mythologies" - not "History" in the Western sense of writing history. When did this western style of reconstructing history emerge? How was it constructed to represent a coherent meaningful process oriented towards some ultimate aim?
In this webinar, Dr. Joydeep Bagchee will share his insights into how a distinctive philosophy of history was developed in Germany, that has come to constitute the dominant "World History narrative' of today, that every child in school learns. He will also introduce a Graduate level course titled "The Philosophy of History" that he will be teaching in the Spring Quarter 2022.
