Ashwin Subramanian and Lakshmi Subramanian
Aks (Ashwin Subramanian) is an LA-based composer, producer and vocalist with credits spanning albums, film & TV, and video games. Trained by Oscar-winner AR Rahman, Aks creates music that blends electronic orchestration with soulful Indian melodies. He has composed music for over 200 original songs and is adjunct faculty in UCLA’s Film Scoring program.
Aks produces albums and live shows of Electronic Bhakti Music with his wife and musical partner Lakshmi. In their concerts, EDM chants, bhajans and stotras interconnect with storytelling and visual media in a celebration of ecstatic devotion. In 2013, Aks & Lakshmi released “The Bhakti Movement”, a project that modernized traditional songs and was distributed worldwide by Sony Music. They have presented major concerts at spiritual organizations such as Chinmaya Mission, Vedanta Society, Brahmakumaris and Aurobindo Society. Audiences describe their music as “healing”, “meditative” and “transforming.”
Lakshmi Chandrashekar Subramanian is a professional vocalist and independent scholar who brings bhakti music and scholarship onto one platform. She holds an MA in Religious Studies from Stanford University and undergraduate degrees in Business and Middle Eastern & South Asian Studies from Emory University. She has consulted for Syracuse University, Stanford University, Sony Music and VICE Media. Lakshmi is a frequent contributor to Hinduism Today, for which she writes about the great Indian poet saints.
She also has several album credits and creates Electronic Bhakti Music with her husband Aks in Los Angeles. Through engaging live concerts, albums and videos, Aks & Lakshmi present the peace, love and pluralistic vision of poet-saints such as Adi Shankaracharya, Kabir, Mirabai, and Surdas to multi-faith audiences. As guest presenters at Princeton University, Stanford University and the Parliament of World Religions, the content of their sacred music brings strong educational value to institutions. They have also been featured as cultural ambassadors at the American and Indian Embassies.
